It’s time to step away from the missiles, the military parades and all that rhetoric that we’ve seen coming out of Pyongyang, North Korea recently. It’s February and every four years that means it’s time for the Winter Olympics. This year’s games are especially intriguing because North Korean participation, while small, has been given considerable coverage when it comes to the topic of international relations. Yet, let’s not overlook the athletes themselves. Being an Olympian from a ‘regular’ country can be demanding and require sacrifice. Being an Olympian from North Korea? Well, that’s even more difficult and filled with dark aspects you may have never known about. Pyongyang’s athletes don’t just need to worry about training and getting to the games. As you’ll see, they also have to worry about failing, not meeting their Leader’s requests and the fate of their families back home. From defections to being used as political pawns, the life of a North Korean Olympian is, indeed, filled with many dark truths.
